Palestinians and Israelis in the Theatre

Palestinians and Israelis in the Theatre

$74.79

Any discussion that incorporates two such very different cultural institutions as the JewishIsraeli theatre and the Palestinian theatre, must of necessity entail separate approaches, while at the same time also encompass the inherent ties between the two cultures. The JewishIsraeli theatre is a complex and developed system in which the dispute with the Palestinians constitutes just one of the important components in its repertoire; while the Palestinians theatre, both within and outside of Israel, is still in the initial stages of consolidation. Dan Urian brings together these two approaches in the introduction of this special issue of Contemporary Theatre Review, by relating to the Palestinian theme as it appears in the JewishIsraeli theatre and by attempting to characterize the Palestinian theatre in general. Author: Urian, Dan/ Urian, Dan Series Title: Contemporary Theatre Studies (Hardcover) Series Number: 3 Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 236 Publication Date: 1996/02/01 Language: English Dimensions: 7.44 x 9.68 x 0.49 inches

Puritanism and Theatre

Puritanism and Theatre

$100.37

The closing of the theatres by Parliament in 1642 is perhaps the bestknown fact in the history of English drama. As the Parliamentary Puritans were then in power, it is easy to assume that all opponents of the theatre were Puritans, and that all Puritans were hostile to the drama. The reality was more interesting and more complicated. Margot Heinemann looks at Thomas Middletons work in relation to the society and social movements of his time, and traces the connections this work may have had with radical, Parliamentarian or Puritan groups or movements. In the light of the recent work of seventeenthcentury historians we can no longer see these complex opposition movements as uniformly antitheatre or antidramatist. The book suggests fresh meanings and implications in Middletons own writings, and helps towards rethinking the place of drama in the changing life of early Stuart England. Author: Heinemann, Margot/ Roper, Lyndal Series Title: Past and Present Publications Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 312 Publication Date: 1982/10/07 Language: English Dimensions: 5.51 x 8.50 x 0.69 inches
