Usa Tour Booking
Travelling the world after university?

Hi

I finish university after 4 years next summer so figured if best start thinking of my next step.

A friend and I hope to go travelling for about 6 months around the world,we are pretty much up for anything: work, volunteering etc

I hope to spend the majority of our time in the USA and Australia (im from the UK) but also would like to maybe do some short tours of europe, china etc

We both would really ideally love an escorted tour through china and or europe. Or a trip that is planned out for us as we dont know the places well and being two females safety is a priority.

Basically im looking to hear anyones own experiences of such a trip, or any advice, recommended companies to book with etc

Money isnt too much of an issue since we have about a year and a half to save up … any advice response greatly appreciated

Thanks xxx

You will almost certainly need to go on an ‘Organised’ trip if you go to China. I suggest that you consider making some where in Asia such a Thailand a base. The Thais are very good organisers and the cost of travel and accommodation is worth considering because money IS an issue. Flight prices to and from countries can vary a lot depending on which country you buy the tickets. You often have to confirm these flights and a good hotel will have some one to do that for you. Receptionists will offer good advice too, so never be afraid to ask.

First job for you is to go to a good travel agent in the UK and ask. Get the very best brochures like Kuioni and Hayes & Jarvis which will show you a lot about the places you want to go to. Ignore the prices in them because you can make up your own itinerary Travel agents can make initial reservations for you. The flights will be scheduled and there are two sorts of tickets to consider . Cheaper ones with a fixed date and time to fly and ‘open ended’ where you can alter the dates by leaving sooner or extending your stay. I have had pre booked taxis meet me at the airport and they wait for you showing a card with your name on it. Get the hotel to organise a taxi for you.

Europe is usually safe enough and public transport in most countries is excellent.

Visas should be investigated too. In most countries it is impossible to work to make additional spending money. USA in particular wont let you work there.

Keep going to different travel agents and making enquiries. That way you will learn a little more each time.

Safety is mainly common sense. No where is 100% risk free.

The tips I would strongly suggest you take are

1. Get good travel insurance. There are some very cheap ones about which barely cover the minimal costs of what every one hopes they will never need. You wont want the worry of not having sufficient cover if you have an accident or are taken ill. So get good cover from a well known company reputable company. Not necessarily a travel agent either. Usually they are over priced.

2. Stay away from drugs they carry a death penalty in some countries. Never carry anything for another person, they may have befriended you just for that purpose.

3. If some one offers you some thing that seems too good to be true. It is.. Walk away..

Voluntary work is very different to a holiday. You may well find that these are in areas where it is less safe than on the tourist trail. Tourism is very lucrative and generally tourists are well looked after in the host country, they do not want adverse publicity.
