Comic Opera

Comic Opera

$90.81

Comic opera, or light opera, denotes a sung dramatic work of a light or comic nature, usually with a happy ending. Forms of comic opera first developed in late 17th century Italy. By the 1730s, a new operatic genre, opera buffa, emerged as an alternative to opera seria. It quickly made its way to France, where it became opra bouffon, and eventually, in the following century, French operetta, with Jacques Offenbach as its most accomplished practitioner. Both the Italian and French forms were major artistic exports to other parts of Europe. Many countries developed their own genres of comic opera, incorporating the Italian and French models along with their own musical traditions. Examples include Viennese operetta, German singspiel, Spanish zarzuela, Russian comic opera, English ballad opera, and Savoy Opera. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from November 19, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Initially, the story sold very poorly upon publication in book form and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century, despite the success of its various film and stage adaptations. The most notable of these were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webbers 1986 musical. The Phantom of the Opera musical is now the longest running Broadway show in history, and one of the most lucrative entertainment enterprises of all time. Tannhuser (Opera)

Tannhuser (Opera)

$60.54

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Tannhuser (full title Tannhuser und der Sngerkrieg auf Wartburg / Tannhuser and the Singers Contest at Wartburg) is an opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner, based on the two Germanic legends of Tannhuser and the song contest at Wartburg. The story centres on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love (a theme running through almost all Wagners mature work). The first performance was given in the Royal Theater in Dresden on 19 October 1845. The composer Ferdinand Hiller, at that time a friend of the composer, assisted in the musical preparations for the production. The part of Elizabeth was sung by Wagners niece Johanna Wagner; Wagner had intended to premiere the opera to mark Johanna Wagners 19th birthday on 13 October, but she was ill, which forced its postponement for six days. Savoy Opera

Savoy Opera

$137.01

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Savoy Operas denote a style of comic opera that developed in Victorian England in the late 19th century, with W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as the original and most successful practitioners. The name is derived from the Savoy Theatre, which impresario Richard DOyly Carte built to house the Gilbert and Sullivan pieces, and later, those by other composerlibrettist teams. The great bulk of the nonGS Savoy Operas either failed to achieve a foothold in the standard repertory, or have faded over the years, leaving the term Savoy Opera as practically synonymous with Gilbert and Sullivan. The Savoy operas (in both senses) were seminal influences on the creation of the modern musical. Gilbert, Sullivan, Carte and other Victorian era British composers, librettists and producers, as well as the contemporary British press and literature, called works of this kind comic operas to distinguish their content and style from that of the often risque continental European operettas that they wished to displace.
