Gilbert & Sullivan…?
Most snooty musical types will tell you that this fantastic duo fit under the category of ‘Musicals’, but, i really believe that this quintessentially British pair, created something which should be considered serious opera, albeit, comic opera, or light opera, but the fact that they can be so readilly compared with such greats as Rossini or Verdi seems to get some people hot under the collar…
these men brought, and still do bring classical music to countless people, and their works follow the basic ‘rules’ of opera, and most of their performers consider themselves operatic singers, and have had some other operatic experiance, so why do we begrudge them the title they deserve?
EdEXCEL music GCSE textbooks put G&S under “Musicals”
and my music teachers agree with this, they will burn for their sins!!!
During nearly 30 years in the music profession I have never heard the works of Gilbert and Sullivan referred to as ‘musicals’ so I’d be interested to know where you heard that.
They are known as ‘Savoy Operas’ and, in a global sense, fit into the category of ‘operetta’ owing to the amount of spoken dialogue within them.
