Audition songs for non-singers?

I’d like to audition for a local community theater – but they only ever stage musicals…I guess those sell the most tickets? I’m a good actress, but not a good singer. Any suggestions for females with a very limited range? I can think of “talking songs” from musicals, but they’re mostly for males (Trouble from Music Man or Why Can’t The English? from My Fair Lady). Any ideas good people? The show is mostly Cole Porter tunes.

Adelaide’s verses in the song, “Sue Me” from Guys and Dolls can be done mostly as a patter, with some overdramatic vocalizations at the end that can be more wails than notes.

The Witch in “Into the Woods” does a sort of vegetable garden rap song that’s all spoken and quite funny.

Queen Agravain’s “Sensitivity” from Once Upon A Mattress is often done as a sort of half-spoken, half-song, all over-acted number.

“Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music is gorgeous, but Glynnis Johns got away with croaking it every night and people loved her. Go figure, huh? Anyway, it’s low, the range isn’t huge, and it parts can certainly be spoken.

But in general you’re right – the guys can get away with being “characters” who can barely carry a tune in musicals, but the girls all have to be triple threats!
